The love of the boss’s life was his Hunter 376. And his office crew wanted to give him the gift of a lifetime. Only problem was that the 376 was long, long out of production - In fact, so long that the Hunter website didn’t have anything on it. Google, too, was remarkably silent when queries were entered and the reference books I had were either too old, or too new. So other than a couple of photos on the web and basic dimensions, I had little to go on. Then several of the boss’s private photos arrived in the e-mail from the gentleman who had commissioned it (I didn’t ask how he turned those up but imagine James Bond must have a rival...) and I was able to send in a quote.
The tale of the "Russian" .gif However, I still needed a sail plan. Well, you don’t need one, but it sure does help. Or at least a beam-on shot of the yacht under sail to determine the cut of the sails and the proportion of the masts. But afret almost an hour on the web I almost gave up the search as everyone had nice accommodation plans and hull photos but nothing else... Finally after more time searching webpage after webpage I turn up a site in Russia where (as far as I could decipher from the Cyrillic) I think a guy had one for sale. He also had what appeared to be the sail plan scanned off an old brochure. But it sure was the weirdest sail plan that I’d ever seen... Finally, after staring at it for a moment I figured that he must have gotten the dimensions of his .gif reversed in his html (an easy thing to do!) - which soon proved to be the case. The gif was small but it at least gave me the correct proportions of the rig and from that and the photos I drew up my plans...
Later, after the Boss had received his birthday gift certificate, he was able to provide further digital shots which helped tremendously in the construction details and this is the result. The 3.25 inch yacht ( 83 mm) is complete down the stainless steel rigging, life lines, Bimini top and silver Zodiac hanging from the stern davits - all in la hull the length of a your finger...
The Hunter 376 was winner of a "Best Value" Award in Cruising World's 1997 Boat of the Year Awards. Designed with weekend or vacation cruising in mind, with two cabins, three double berths and a single, and a maximum accomodation of seven, the yacht remains a favourite with the charter industry. Cruising World coments that the yacht's equipment even included "a copy of Chapman's" on the chart table...
