"My friend told me that when he buys his yacht he wants it to be a Hunter 290 and he will call it Pana "See 'Ya" I want to tell him ‘follow your dream...’ Can you build it in a bottle? With it’s name on the bow?”

Hunter 290 sailSure, I could build it. Only problem was finding the right bottle for that tall Bermuda rig. Finally, we settled on a giant, industrial mogul light bulb instead.

Now, if I could only get the plans... The 290 was such a new design that there was not much out there. A search of the web turned up several photos and a small, rather jagged-edged sail plan on the Sail Magazine web site where it was featured as one of the magazines top ten sailboats for 2000. A quick e-mail to Hunter Marine produced a brochure with accommodation plan and better photos. But no sail plan - other than one less than 1/2 “ high. However, five hours at the drafting board soon converted the photos and the jagged edged .jpg off the SAIL web site into a usable set of plans from which this model could be built.

Hunter 290 photoThe Hunter 290 is one of the latest in a series of Hunter single-masted yachts and was chosen by SAIL magazine as one of their Top 10 for the year 2000. The SAIL review starts, "A family cruiser should be safe and easy to handle under sail and livable for weekend and week-long family cruises–and should do it all on a budget. The Hunter 290 fills the bill and then some..." Concluding that, "The Hunter 290 is a lot of safe-sailing boat for the money, and, aside from some fixable niggles, the boat is a good way to start a family cruising."

Of course, once the ship was delivered and presented, her new owner was ecstatic. "Look at that," he said, "The sails are very well trimmed - 'close hauled' sailing about 45-60 degrees toward the wind..." Pana "See 'Ya", now proudly sails from the top of a bookcase in his office.
